The 5000F Coaxial Nanosecond Flashlamp

Introducing the
fourth generation 5000F
It is hardly surprising that spark
sources are used more than any other pulses source for fluorescence
lifetime studies. They have appropriate pulse duration,
are easy to use, offer a wide spectral range and give good
value for money. The coaxial nanosecond flashlamp was invented
by founder members of IBH in 1981 (reference
1) and the Jobin Yvon IBH 5000F is the fourth
generation version. This workhorse is an ideal excitation
source for fluorescence lifetimes between 100ps and 100µs,
particularly at wavelengths shorter than 370nm. Unlike older
flashlamp designs, the 5000F is easy to use
and does not require extensive routine
maintenance.
The Mark 4 5000F has the following features:

The 5000F control
electronics are housed in a high quality EMC-compliant rack
mountable enclosure containing the following functional
blocks:

Regulated
0 to 10kV spark voltage supply
-
Variable 10Hz to 100kHz thyratron trigger pulse generator
-
Timing synchronisation detector (risetime <1ns) with
regulated power supply and integrated constant fraction
discriminator

Spark stability monitor for "free-run" and "misfire"
indication
-
Digital performance monitoring and display of spark chamber
pressure, spark voltage and spark current.
NIM and TTL-compatible
synchronization outputs are provided for triggering external
devices. An optocoupled trigger input is provided to allow
external devices to trigger the 5000F (slave mode operation).
The synchronization outputs remain available in slave mode.
Two auxiliary ±15V DC outputs are provided for powering
external devices, such as amplifiers and detectors.
Note that unlike older flashlamp designs, the Jobin
Yvon IBH Mark 4 5000F does not require an additional external
synchronization detector and discriminator.
